Up to 16Mbps Downstream
Up to 16Mbps Downstream

Annex M ADSL2+ connections aren't able to deliver the headline download speeds of other ADSL 2+ products. Instead they are aimed at delivering the best upload speed possible, and to achieve this download speed is sacrificed.

Up to 2.5Mbps Upstream
Up to 2.5Mbps Upstream

Annex M connections deliver the highest upload speeds of any ADSL product in our portfolio with speeds of up to 2.5Mbps. Please ensure that your router supports Annex M, as not all routers do.

Downloads Capped
Downloads Capped

Bandwidth is neither unlimited and nor is it cheap for an ISP to purchase and operate a network. As opposed to flooding our products with lots of heavy traffic shaping, bottlenecks and fair usage policies, we clearly state the limits you can download each month. The caps operate on a calendar month, resetting on the 1st.

Unlimited Uploads
Unlimited Uploads

Unlike the downloads, we don't restrict how much you can upload from your connection. This can be ideal especially if you primarily send data (eg off-site backups, or send large attachment emails). None of these activities count towards your monthly usage allowances.

Annex M Explained

Apply Annex M broadband in your business

What is Annex M?

Annex M is a derivative of the next generation of broadband connections supported through BT's 21st Century Network (21CN). Unlike Annex A ADSL 2+ which focuses on supplying the highest possible download speed, Annex M sacrifices ultimate download speed for a better upstream speed. The result is a reduction in download load speed from a maximum of 24Mbps, down to 16Mbps. The upload speed increases from a maximum 1.3Mbps to 2.5Mbps.

Availability of Annex M

All exchanges that are enabled for 21CN can receive the Annex M product. Please query our broadband checker for confirmation of whether your exchange can deliver this service to you, as well as confirmation of the predicted speeds for your line or area.

Will my router support Annex M?

Most ADSL routers which support ADSL 2+ should support Annex M. Some manufacturers have specifically designed their router to handle Annex M. If if doubt please contact the manufacturer or router documentation.

What other variants are there?

This table surmises the various ADSL technologies that exist to make it clearer where this new product fits in with other terms you may have heard before.

Activation Charges
ADSL (fixed rate) We have now phased these products out. They were fixed ADSL speeds ranging from 256k up to 2Mbps with an upload speed of 256k.
ADSL Max (up to 8Mbps) These allowed rate adaptive download speeds of up to 8Mbps with options of 448k or 832k on the upload.
ADSL 2+ Annex A (up to 24Mbps) A new generation of rate adaptive broadband connections offering up to 24Mbps downloads and maximum 1.3Mbps on the upload.
ADSL 2+ Annex M By sacrificing some of the potential download speeds, these connections can support up to 2.5Mbps on the upload speeds.
Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) The next generation of broadband connections which sees the removal of part of the copper network being removed using fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) technologies. In doing so the speeds achieved are significantly higher at up to 40Mbps downstream and up to 10Mbps upstream. Further improvements in speed are expected, although the foot print is still relatively small.
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) Bypassing the street cabinet entirely, Fibre To The Premises will see a fibre connection installed directly to your building from the exchange. No copper phone cables means that the speeds will be initially a very impressive 100Mbps downstream.

IMPORTANT

Some of the following points may be considered obvious, but they are important to note:

  • ADSL broadband is not supplied with any form of warranty. It may take BT more than 24 hours to fix some problems.
  • For those operating mission critical applications it is always recommended that you consider a backup Internet connection or a more resilient solution with a service level agreement, such as a leased line.
  • ADSL is a contended service. As such latency and pings times can vary. We cannot make any guarantees regarding the speeds achieved.
  • Please do not make requests for part refunds, good will gestures, or free services in the event of less than desirable performances. We are unable to offer these. We will always ensure that any faults are dealt with quickly and efficiently, but sometimes we have to rely on our partners such as BT Wholesale which can delay matters.
  • The quality and speed of your ADSL broadband will be affected by your line. If you suffer from poor quality calls, crackles or any form of interference these are issues you must take up with your line rental supplier. They are outside of our influence and should be treated as voice affecting faults. Once addressed you may find that the broadband faults are also fixed.
  • No matter how tedious some of the questions we ask you may seem when fault fixing, we only ask for information that will assist in getting a quicker fix to your problem. Sadly BT Wholesale haven't developed any magical tools to fix problems within minutes, so the first step will be to fact find in order to discover the best way forward.

Standard Prices

Activation & Migration Costs for ADSL

Activation Charges
ADSL Activation £30 If you have a working phone line, but no broadband from another provider, then the activation fee is applicable. BT Wholesale charge to connect the connection. ICUK subsidises this price to lower it to this level.
Fast Track Activation (in addition to activation) £150 If you are in a rush for your broadband connection then there is a fast track order process which is applicable to new activation orders only. Most fast track orders complete within 24-48 hours of them being placed which can reduce the standard activation time by about 4-5 days. This fee is in addition to the standard activation cost.

Migration Charges
Migration FREE The services listed on this page operate using BT Wholesale equipment within the exchange. If you are migrating from another ISP that also uses BT Wholesale to us, then we will cover the £11+VAT migration costs.
Migration from LLU Provider £30 An LLU (local loop unbundling) broadband provider would have installed their own equipment within the local exchange. To move your connection back to BT Wholesale equipment a fee of £40+VAT applies. We subsidise this with a 25% discount.

Modify Charges
Additional Data Transfer (per GB) £1.50 In the event you are predicted to exceed your download limits we would send you warning emails. These will contain the following options:

1. Allow the connection to be speed limited. No additional charges would be applicable for the remainder of the calendar month.
2. Upgrade the data cap to the next level.
3. Pay for an excess data transfer and no be speed limited.

It is the latter option where this would be applicable.
Regrade Speed (one-off) £11 This is applicable if you wish to re-grade a fixed ADSL speed (eg 512k up to 2Mb) or if you wished to switch from 20CN (ADSL Max up to 8Mb) up to 21CN (ADSL 2+ up to 24Mb) as long as these are available to you within the exchange you are connected to.
BT Wholesale Cease Charge £31.12 In the event you cease a broadband connection then BT Wholesale apply this fee to remove broadband from a line. It is not applicable if you simply migrate to another provider. It is, however, applicable if you cease your phone line, or you wish to remove broadband completely off the line. ICUK does not profit from this charge, we simply pass it across at cost.
